Stainless steel equal T-bars, also referred to as standard T-sections, are structural profiles with a cross-section in the shape of the letter T. Equal T-bars have a stem and a flange of the same or similar width, resulting in a symmetric cross-section about the vertical axis. They are produced by Montanstahl primarily via laser welding, enabling precise dimensional control with dimensions and tolerances defined according to EN 10055 and a wide choice of stainless steel grades. Equal T-bars are used both as primary structural members and as stiffeners, reinforcing elements, and connection pieces in fabricated structures.

Equal T-Bars FAQ

What is the difference between an equal T-bar and a structural tee cut from an I-beam?

An equal T-bar is a purpose-made profile where stem height and flange width are equal or closely proportioned. A structural tee is produced by splitting an IPE, HEA, or HEB beam longitudinally down the web, giving a T-profile whose dimensions are determined by the parent beam series. Both types are available in stainless steel from Montanstahl.

How is a laser welded T-bar manufactured?

A flat flange plate is joined to a flat stem (web) plate at 90° using a precision laser weld along the junction line. The process produces a very narrow heat-affected zone, minimal distortion, and clean dimensional geometry. The laser weld is inspected visually and may be subjected to dye-penetrant or ultrasonic testing for critical applications.

Are stainless steel T-bars used in architectural applications?

Yes. Equal T-bars are frequently used in architectural metalwork: as framing profiles for glass facades, as structural accents in exposed interior steelwork, and as edge profiles for stainless cladding systems. Surface finishes from mill finish to mirror polish are available depending on the aesthetic requirement.

Can T-bars be supplied in duplex stainless steel?

Yes. Duplex grade 1.4462 offers approximately double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades (>460 MPa vs. ~210 MPa for 316L), allowing more slender sections to carry equivalent loads. This is particularly valuable in offshore and marine structures where weight saving is important.

What standard governs the tolerances of stainless steel T-bars?

Standard T-bar geometries reference EN 10055 for hot rolled equal flange tees. Laser welded T-bars from Montanstahl are produced to equivalent dimensional tolerances. Custom T-sections are produced to agreed dimensional specifications and supplied with the corresponding material certificates.
