European I-Beams IPE – Stainless Steel

Home » Products » Product Catalog » Stainless Steel Beams » IPE – European I Beams

IPE beams are the most widely used European standard I-section for structural applications. Characterised by parallel flanges and a relatively narrow width-to-height ratio, IPE sections are optimised for bending about the major axis and are a fundamental component of structural steel design across Europe and beyond. Montanstahl manufactures stainless steel IPE beams from IPE 80 through to IPE 600 and beyond using laser welding technology, with dimensional properties conforming to the European standard series according to EN 10365 with product tolerances characterized through EN 10034: 1993. The resulting profiles are directly substitutable for carbon steel IPE beams in corrosive environment applications.

Key Applications & Use Cases

  • Primary and secondary structural beams in buildings, mezzanines, and industrial platforms where corrosion resistance is required
  • Bridge and footbridge beams in coastal and urban environments where de-icing salts or atmospheric pollution are concerns
  • Crane runway girders in food processing, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing plants
  • Support beams for process equipment, vessels, and tanks in chemical plants
  • Structural frames for swimming pools, aquatic centres, and water treatment plants
  • Architectural exposed structural steel in atriums, canopies, and feature facades
  • Offshore and subsea structural members where the combination of strength and corrosion resistance is essential

Available Stainless Steel Grades

1.4301 (AISI 304) and 1.4404 (AISI 316L) are standard. Duplex 1.4462 is increasingly specified where higher yield strength (min. 460 MPa) or enhanced chloride resistance is required. High-temperature grades on request.

European I-Beams IPE Profiles FAQ

What dimensional standard governs stainless steel IPE beams?

The nominal dimensions of IPE beams are defined in the European standard series EN 19-57, which is widely referenced in steel design software and Eurocode 3 section tables. Tolerances on shape and dimensions are governed by EN 10034.

What is the key structural advantage of IPE over HEA or HEB beams?

IPE beams have a high depth-to-width ratio, giving them a high moment of inertia per unit mass about the major axis. They are therefore the preferred choice when the primary loading is bending. HEA and HEB wide flange beams offer more balanced section properties about both axes, making them better suited to column applications or combined bending and compression.

How does Eurocode 3 address stainless steel beams?

Eurocode 3 Part 1-4 (EN 1993-1-4) provides supplementary rules for the design of stainless steel structures. It covers material properties, cross-section classification, buckling resistance, and connections for austenitic, duplex, and ferritic stainless steels, and can be used in conjunction with section tables for IPE profiles.

Can stainless steel IPE beams be used as crane runway beams?

Yes. Stainless steel IPE beams are used as crane runway beams in environments where contamination by corrosion products must be avoided, such as food, pharmaceutical, and electronics manufacturing. Appropriate design detailing to prevent fatigue at rail attachment points is required in accordance with EN 1993-6 (crane runway beams).

What is the maximum available size of IPE beam in stainless steel from Montanstahl?

The standard catalogue extends up to IPE 600. Larger sections and custom I-beam configurations can be laser welded on request, with maximum individual lengths of 15 m. Flanges up to 80 mm thick and webs up to 1,000 mm high are achievable.
