Unequal Leg Angle Profiles – Stainless Steel

Home » Products » Product Catalog » Stainless Steel Angles » Unequal angle profiles

Stainless steel unequal leg angles differ from their equal-leg counterparts in that the two legs have different widths, making them particularly suited to connections where load transfer occurs asymmetrically or where the profile must fit into constrained geometric envelopes. Dimensioned according to EN 10056-1 (1998) and produced within tolerances defined by EN 10056-2 (1993), Montanstahl’s range covers a wide spectrum of asymmetric proportions, produced by laser welding, hot rolling or cold drawing.

Key Applications & Use Cases

  • Asymmetric structural connections in crane runways, monorails, and overhead handling systems
  • Stiffeners for sheet metal panels and facades in architectural cladding systems
  • Support brackets with different flange projections in process plant steelwork
  • Gutter and drainage channel edge reinforcement in stainless construction
  • Shipbuilding and naval architecture, where asymmetric profile placement optimises space utilisation
  • Framework for display cases, museum exhibits, and cleanroom environments requiring aesthetic precision
  • Edge protection and trim profiles in industrial flooring and grating

Available Stainless Steel Grades

Available in austenitic grades 1.4301 (AISI 304) and 1.4404 (AISI 316L) as standard. Duplex 1.4462, super-duplex 1.4410, and other specialty alloys available upon request.

Unequal leg Angle Profiles FAQ

What distinguishes an unequal leg angle from an equal leg angle?

In an unequal leg angle the two legs have different widths (e.g., L100×65×7), whereas an equal leg angle has both legs of the same width (e.g., L100×100×10). The asymmetry of the unequal profile shifts the centroid and changes the section’s bending behaviour about each axis, which can be advantageous in specific structural and connection configurations.

Are unequal leg angles dimensionally standardised?

Yes, they follow EN 10056-1 (1998) for nominal dimensions and EN 10056-2 (1993) for permissible tolerances, the same standards as equal leg angles. Montanstahl can also produce fully custom geometries beyond the standard range.

What production methods are used for unequal leg angles in stainless steel?

Montanstahl manufactures unequal leg angles primarily by laser welding, which allows precise control over leg dimensions and wall thickness independently for each leg. Some smaller sizes are also available cold drawn.

Are stainless steel unequal leg angles available in duplex grades?

Yes. Duplex 1.4462 (2205) and super-duplex 1.4410 (2507) are available for applications requiring higher strength and enhanced resistance to stress corrosion cracking, such as offshore and chemical processing environments.

Can I order unequal leg angles with a specific surface finish?

Yes. Montanstahl offers several surface finishes including mill finish (hot rolled), pickled and passivated, as well as brushed or polished finishes (e.g., 1D, 2B, 2K) upon request. The appropriate finish depends on the application’s corrosion and aesthetic requirements.
