Montanstahl is worldwide market leader in welding solid steel and stainless steel profiles with laser technology. The profile components are predominantly laser- or plasma-cut flat strips but can as well be other solid profiles like rounds, squares or hollow profiles like tubes. The welds are made with powerful lasers without the use of filler material, producing very small weld seams. Virtually all commercially available mild, carbon and stainless steels can be welded. Monolithic welds up to a depth of 25 mm are possible.
Sharp edge profiles
Laser fused sections generally feature small internal and external radii and can be classified as sharp edged profiles. Standard structural profiles like angles, channels, tees or heavy-duty beams (HEA, HEB, IPE, W, S) as well as squares and rectangles hollow sections, are produced on a regular base.
Flexibility on quantity and sizes
The manufacturing technology is very flexible when it comes to quantities. Projects with small volumes, or even 1 bar prototypes, can be served as well as large projects with more than 100 tons per batch.
The maximum bar length is 15.000 mm with a profile width of 1.000 mm and a height of 2000 mm. Small shapes, starting from 20 x 20 mm, can be produced as well. The components are mainly welded at an angle of 90° but, when required by design, even tighter or larger angularity can be matched.
Laser welded profile surface
Laser fused profiles generally show a much better surface finish than hot-rolled or extruded products, as the raw material components are cut out from high quality hot rolled plate. After welding, the sections are straightened, sand blasted and in case of stainless steel pickled or passivated, to eliminate all impurities caused by the welding process. On hollow, angle and channel sections the external welds are removed prior to sand blasting, so that welds are no longer visible showing smooth and flat surfaces.
The profiles undergo a stringent quality control, involving continuous checks with dedicated measuring equipment on the whole manufacturing process. The products and the process have been approved by several external authorities like TÜV (German Technical Inspectorate) and do comply with EN ISO 13919-1, EN ISO 15614-1, EN ISO 15609-1 and ASTM A276, A479 and A484. In 2012 Laser fused profiles from Montanstahl achieved the official product standard ASTM 1069.
