T-sections are costum-made for the special employment within coke ovens in Poland. On that account laser welding technology is deployed and the results are sensational.

Customized T-sections are needed

Montanstahl produced two different special T-sections in stainless steel on customer design for the construction of frames for furnace doors of coke ovens.
According to the customer’s request, we supplied the bars in different lengths from four meters up to six meters.
The chosen material was the high temperature suitable stainless steel grade 1.4541 (SS 321) with a high degree of protection properties against intergranular corrosion.

Challenges of the production

Particularly challenging was the size-thickness ratio of the web. The particularly tall webs (64 millimeters and 124 millimeters) in consideration of the extremely thin material thickness of 3 millimeters(!!) result in a real challenging product even when using the extremely distortion-poor laser weldng technology.Special T sections for ovens
Also a flat bar (20 x 6 millimeters) was laser welded onto the web. Its positioning was requested with a very stringent tolerance.
This product is ideal for the laser welding technology, as the heat input for welding this special section is very little compared to the heat input of conventional welding that generates big distortions.

Impressive results

The result is a very straight bar,  as far as both straightness and angularity is concerned. Thus only little straightening activity is necessary after welding.
Furthermore, the flange had been previously machined to a tapered shape on one side.
The bars were supplied raw, without pickling, as the customer was going to perform a final pickling after the assembling of the entire frame, that needed additional welding.
