How our curtain wall sections fit with a boundless architectural thought.
The project was headed by Sigrid Hintersteininger Architects (SHA), founded in Stuttgart in 2007. As the title of Hintersteininger’s degree “Living Without Boundaries” suggests, the architect explores what kind of spaces and urban contexts encourage a working and living environment without boundaries. This line of thought led to the architectural project for the Ludwigsburg plant of the German HAHN+KOLB Group, covering an area of 48000 square meters, giving space to the sales offices with 8000 square meters and 300 workstations, a technological and logistics center with 11000 square meters and 540000 storage bins positioned up to 16m height.
Why laser welded sections are the perfect solution.
The modern plant had considerably challenging requirements to meet, it should include high-level green technologies for heating and cooling as well as exploitation of solar energy for electric power production. In order comply with these conditions, SHA had to find a special tailored curtain wall system with mullions and transoms in different shapes.
These special needs brought them to Montanstahl, leading manufacturer of custom steel profiles. Thanks to the co-engineering and collaboration with the customer, our technicians were able to design two different types of profiles, perfectly meeting the requirements of this building: customized T-sections and angle bars in different sizes. Both solutions were produced by cutting flat stripes from steel plates, which were then laser fused together resulting in sharp-edged curtain wall profiles perfect for Hintersteininger’s project.
The advantages of tailor-made solutions.
The width of the profile is designed to remain within the joint width of the glass panels, thus being invisible from the outside. The depth of the section is usually determined according to the structural values required.

On other occasions Montanstahl had supplied façades with a greater depth because they were better suited to the customer’s requirements.
Bottom line? thanks to their defined shape, our curtain walls are an excellent solution that can be adapted to any occasion: thanks to the technical characteristics of the profiles and materials, it is possible to reach important advantages that combine aesthetics with the functionality of the product.
Finalizing and turn key supplies.
Montanstahl supplied the different sections both in non-standard lengths and, where requested, in a 45-degree angled cut for easy and quick installation on site. The sand blasted surface of the laser welded profiles gave a pleasant matte look and the bars had only to be painted in order to be protected against corrosion and rust formation.
