Laser Fused Stainless Steel Stop-Logs for Water Level Control
Stop-logs are structural elements used to regulate or block water flow in floodgates, rivers, canals, reservoirs, and fresh water conduits. Because they operate under permanent water exposure and often in chemically aggressive environments, corrosion resistance is the primary material requirement. Montanstahl specialises in producing stop-logs in austenitic stainless steels 304L and 316L, using laser fusion to join flat bars into sharp-edged profiles with corner radii below 2 mm. No standard catalogue design exists for stop-logs: each section is tailored to the application, with geometries ranging from channels and T-sections to omega-profiles and fully custom cross-sections, supplied worldwide to water management projects.

Why Corner Radius Matters in Stop-Log Design
A stop-log seals against a frame or groove in the water structure. The quality of that seal depends directly on the geometry of the contact surfaces and the sharpness of the section corners. A large corner radius, as produced by hot rolling or press bending, creates a gap at the seal line that allows water to pass even when the log is in position. A corner radius below 2 mm, as produced by laser fusion from flat bar, brings the contact geometry close enough to theoretical that the seal functions effectively under hydraulic head. This is the technical reason why laser fused profiles are the preferred production method for stop-logs where leakage control is a performance requirement rather than a secondary consideration.
304L, 316L, and Duplex: Grade Selection for the Exposure Environment
For freshwater applications in moderate environments, stainless steel 304L provides adequate corrosion resistance at reasonable cost. Where chloride content is elevated, as in brackish water, seawater-influenced canals, or industrial water treatment, 316L with its molybdenum addition is the appropriate grade. For the most aggressive environments, higher-alloy austenitic grades or duplex stainless steels may be specified. Montanstahl produces stop-log profiles across this full range of grades, always using laser fusion to maintain the dimensional precision and sharp corner geometry that the sealing function requires. Each order is tailored to the application: section geometry, grade, length, and surface condition are all determined by the specific installation.

Application Context
Stop-logs sit within Montanstahl’s Water Treatment & Management segment, where laser fused special profiles in stainless steel are specified for hydraulic infrastructure requiring precise geometry, long service life, and corrosion resistance across a range of water chemistry conditions. Floodgates, sluice structures, canal locks, reservoir outlets, and water treatment plant intakes all use stop-logs at some point in their design. Because no standard section geometry covers all applications, laser welding from flat bar is the production method that makes tight-tolerance, application-specific stop-log profiles commercially viable at any required scale. Montanstahl supplies stainless steel stop-logs to water management projects worldwide.
