Stainless Steel 316L Stiffeners for the Prilling Tower of the Orica Fertilizer Plant

An Indonesian engineering and construction company designed a tall prilling tower for the Orica fertilizer plant on Kooragang Island, Australia. Prilling towers are used to convert molten ammonium nitrate or urea into solid granules by spraying the melt from the top and allowing it to solidify as it falls through the tower. The structural stiffeners holding the tower together had to be supplied in stainless steel 316L to resist the corrosive environment of a fertilizer production facility. Montanstahl was commissioned to supply beams, channels, and angle bars across multiple delivery schedules aligned with the phased construction of the tower, combining immediate stock supply for standard sections with a purpose-run production programme for the custom sections.

Why a Prilling Tower Requires 316L and Not Standard Carbon Steel

Prilling towers operate in an environment where ammonium nitrate or urea dust and moisture are present continuously. Both compounds are corrosive to carbon steel over time, and the combination of fertilizer residue, humidity, and periodic cleaning creates conditions that standard structural steel cannot handle without heavy coating systems that require maintenance. Stainless steel 316L, with its molybdenum addition, provides substantially better corrosion resistance in these conditions than 304L and is the grade of choice for structural components in fertilizer and petrochemical plant environments. Using stainless steel also eliminates the coating maintenance cycle, which in a continuously operating industrial facility represents a meaningful operational benefit over the design life of the structure.

Stock Supply, Production Optimisation, and Phased Delivery

The phased construction programme required Montanstahl to respond on two parallel tracks. Standard sections in 6-metre lengths were dispatched immediately from stock to meet the first phase of the construction schedule. For the custom sections, a production optimisation analysis was run to minimise material waste before cutting began. The custom profiles were produced by unrolling 316L coils, laser cutting strips from sheet, and laser welding the strips into the required beam, channel, and angle bar geometries. The finished sections were straightened, shot blasted, cut to the specified lengths, and held in warehouse storage ready for collection and immediate installation on site, reducing the handling complexity for the construction team on Kooragang Island.

Application Context

This project is part of Montanstahl’s petrochemical and industrial segment, where laser fused special profiles in stainless steel 316L are specified for structural applications in corrosive process environments. Prilling towers, pressure vessel supports, and industrial plant frameworks regularly require sections that combine corrosion resistance with non-standard geometry, a combination that standard mill sections in stainless steel cannot always provide. Montanstahl supplies stainless steel structural profiles combining stock availability for standard sections and short-lead production for custom geometries to petrochemical and fertilizer projects worldwide.
