Stainless Steel 316L Stiffener Beams for Brewery Pipe Support in the USA

An industrial brewery in the United States needed structural beams to support stainless steel hygienic piping running through both indoor and outdoor environments. The cleaning agents used in food and beverage production are chemically aggressive, and the pipe support structure had to match the corrosion resistance of the piping itself. Carbon steel was ruled out from the start: contact between carbon and stainless steel in a wet environment causes galvanic corrosion, which would have compromised both the structure and the hygiene integrity of the system. Montanstahl supplied laser fused W-beams and hot rolled angle bars in stainless steel 316L, compliant with ASTM A1069, from stock held at Stainless Structurals in Texas.

Why Galvanic Corrosion Ruled Out Carbon Steel

When stainless steel piping is in contact with carbon steel structural members in a wet or chemically active environment, galvanic corrosion develops at the interface. In a brewery setting, where caustic and acidic cleaning agents are used routinely and moisture is a constant, this is not a theoretical risk but a near-certain failure mechanism. The pipe support structure therefore had to be fabricated entirely in stainless steel to maintain electrochemical compatibility with the piping. Grade 316L was specified for its molybdenum content, which improves resistance to chloride-containing cleaning agents compared to standard 304L.

W-Beams and Angle Bars from Stock, Cut to Length

Montanstahl supplied laser fused W-beams in size W-4×13 and hot rolled angle bars in stainless steel 316L, drawn from stock held at Stainless Structurals in Texas. All profiles were supplied in 6-metre lengths for the customer to cut on site according to the pipe layout. Compliance with ASTM A1069, the standard governing laser fused stainless steel structural sections in the North American market, was met as a baseline requirement. Technical support was also provided to assist the customer with structural verification and section selection relative to the expected pipe loads and support spacing.

Application Context

This project sits within Montanstahl’s Food & Beverage segment, where stainless steel structural profiles are specified for pipe support, process equipment frames, and hygienic structural applications requiring full material compatibility with the production environment. The requirement for ASTM A1069 compliance reflects the North American market’s standard for laser fused stainless steel sections, which Montanstahl meets across its standard and custom range. Profiles for applications of this type are held in stock and available for rapid supply across the United States through Stainless Structurals.
