Ultra-Long Stainless Steel 316L IPE Beams for a Fertilizer Plant Dome in Poland
A new Urea and Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) fertilizer plant in Poland required 95 tonnes of stainless steel structural sections for the construction of its main tower dome. The dome geometry was designed with curved structural elements, which meant the beams had to be delivered in one single piece to avoid butt welds on site during the curving operation. That single requirement drove the need for ultra-long IPE270 beams spanning 15.1 metres, a length that standard production lines cannot accommodate. Montanstahl produced 144 IPE beams at full length in stainless steel 316L, alongside specially manufactured U-channels and angle bars in non-standard lengths up to 10.8 m, and shipped the complete order to Poland.

Why 15.1 Metre Beams: the Logic of One-Piece Dome Construction
Curved structural elements in a dome can be formed in two ways: by delivering short sections and joining them with butt welds on site, or by delivering full-length sections that are curved as a single piece after installation. The second approach is structurally preferable because it eliminates the weld joints at points of bending stress and simplifies the on-site construction sequence significantly. For the Polish fertilizer plant dome, the structural design required the second approach, which translated directly into a 15.1-metre single-piece beam requirement. No standard stainless steel IPE270 production capability reaches this length: the project required a purpose-built production run using in-house equipment designed for ultra-long sections.
De-Coiling, Laser Cutting, Fusion, and Straightening at Over 15 Metres
Montanstahl produced the IPE270 beams by de-coiling stainless steel 316L plate in lengths exceeding 15 metres, laser cutting the strips to the flange and web dimensions of the IPE270 profile, and laser fusing the assembled sections. After welding, each beam was straightened using equipment specifically designed for ultra-long sections, to hold the dimensional tolerances required for a structural element that would be curved on site. The 144 beams were supplied at full length. U-channels in sizes UPN80, UPN100, and UPN120, a UAP140 section, and L150 angle bars in lengths up to 10.8 m completed the structural package. The full order of 95 tonnes was shipped to Poland and met all technical and logistical requirements of the construction programme.

Application Context
This project is part of Montanstahl’s Oil, Gas & Petroleum segment, where laser fused stainless steel structural sections are specified for industrial plant construction requiring non-standard lengths, corrosion-resistant grades, and consistent dimensional quality across large batch quantities. The combination of ultra-long section capability and in-house straightening equipment for sections over 15 metres is a production capability that distinguishes Montanstahl in the supply of structural stainless steel profiles for industrial and petrochemical construction projects. Profiles of this type are produced to order and supplied worldwide.
