Custom Laser Fused Stainless Steel 321 Skirt Profiles for Oil Reactor Retrofit
When an oil reactor in the United States needed upgrading, a full disassembly was not on the table. The retrofit approach relied on internal structural skirts welded inside the existing reactor walls, supporting beams and T-profiles for the new operational stages. Montanstahl was asked to manufacture the custom E-shaped profiles that form these skirts: curved segments 450 mm in height and 90 mm in width, laser fused from pre-curved plate strips in stainless steel 321. The geometry, the material requirements, and the need for certified weld integrity made this a technically demanding fabrication task.

Curved Geometry, High-Temperature Loads, and Certified Weld Testing
Working inside an existing reactor imposes tight constraints. Each segment had to follow a precise curvature so it fit the reactor wall exactly, with no margin for dimensional error. The welding required 3D laser fusion with full weld penetration along the curved profile, in a material that also had to carry internal structural loads in a high-temperature environment. Stainless steel 321 was specified for its resistance to high temperatures and intergranular corrosion. On top of the geometric and thermal requirements, every weld had to pass certified ultrasonic testing to the customer’s specification.
5-Axis 3D Laser Fusion with Ultrasonic Weld Inspection
Montanstahl used 3D laser fusion with a 5-axis robot to achieve full weld penetration along the curved profiles. All base materials were pre-cut to the curved shape and assembled with integrated stiffeners to maintain stability during production. This approach kept the geometry under control throughout the joining process and ensured each segment came out within the required dimensional tolerances. Ultrasonic testing was carried out by qualified personnel in accordance with the customer’s specification, confirming weld integrity across every segment. The outcome was a set of high-integrity structural skirt profiles that allowed the reactor to be upgraded securely and efficiently, without complete reconstruction.

Application Context
This case sits in Montanstahl’s oil and gas segment, where custom laser welded profiles are specified for high-integrity structural applications inside process equipment. A reactor retrofit is a demanding project: the profiles have to meet precise geometric requirements, carry structural loads at high temperatures, and pass certified non-destructive testing before installation. Custom stainless steel profiles like these are supplied worldwide to engineering contractors and plant operators working on upgrades, retrofits, and maintenance of refinery and petrochemical equipment.
