Special Profiles for Telescopic Slides and Linear Rails
A manufacturer of telescopic slide rails had been producing the necessary components in-house by machining from solid bar stock, a process that consumed significant tool time and generated considerable scrap. The goal of moving to a pre-shaped profile was to reduce processing costs, particularly those related to consumable tooling, and to reduce the material removed at the machining stage. Montanstahl was asked to supply beam and flat bar profiles in custom sizes, in both C45 carbon steel and stainless steel 316L depending on the application, using the most cost-effective production technology for each geometry and quantity. A prototype-first approach was agreed: prototypes were delivered and approved by the customer before full production quantities were committed.

Why Pre-Shaped Profiles Reduce Cost in Telescopic Slide Production
Machining a telescopic slide rail from solid bar removes a large proportion of the original material as chips, consumes significant tool life, and requires long cycle times per part. A near-net-shape pre-formed profile brings the starting cross-section close to the finished geometry, reducing the volume of material removed, the machining time per part, and the cost of consumable tooling per unit produced. The saving scales directly with the difference between the bar cross-section and the finished rail cross-section: the more complex the rail geometry, the greater the potential saving from starting with a pre-shaped profile rather than from solid. For profiles that are produced in recurring quantities, the investment in tooling for a custom production run is recovered quickly against the cumulative saving on machining costs.
Multi-Technology Production: the Right Process for Each Geometry
The range of beam profiles required, from 40 mm to 150 mm in height with varying wall thicknesses, spans a geometry space where no single production technology is optimal for every size. Montanstahl selected the production route for each profile based on the cross-section geometry, the required quantity, and the material grade: hot extrusion, hot rolling, and laser welding were all used across the beam range. Flat plates were laser-cut to the required dimensions and sandblasted to produce a sufficiently homogeneous surface for the customer’s subsequent machining operations. All profiles were produced in both C45 carbon steel and stainless steel 316L, giving the customer a single source for the full range regardless of the application environment and the corresponding material specification.

Application Context
This project sits within Montanstahl’s Telescopic Slides segment, where special profiles in carbon steel and stainless steel are produced as pre-shaped machining blanks for manufacturers of telescopic slide rails, linear guides, and similar precision mechanical components. The approach of matching the production technology to the profile geometry and quantity, rather than forcing every section through a single process, is what allows Montanstahl to supply a full range of rail profiles from a single source at competitive cost across both carbon and stainless grades. Prototypes are produced and approved before full production runs are released, protecting the customer’s investment in tooling and process qualification. Profiles are supplied worldwide to telescopic slide and linear rail manufacturers.
