Duplex U Profiles for Industrial Fan Support Structures

The frame that holds an industrial fan does more than carry weight. It has to absorb the vibration a rotating assembly produces for thousands of hours without loosening or deforming, and it has to do so in air that is often hot and chemically aggressive. A world leading manufacturer of high performance fans and ventilation systems needed U-shaped profiles for exactly this role, with sharp corners, tight tolerances and a material capable of resisting the environment. Montanstahl produced them in duplex stainless steel S32205 using hybrid laser welding, so that the customer could cut, bend and assemble them into perfectly mirrored supports.

Support Structures That Work as Hard as the Machine

The customer is a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance industrial fans and ventilation systems, equipment that provides air circulation, ventilation and cooling across a wide range of industrial settings. These fans often work under harsh conditions, with high temperatures, corrosive atmospheres and continuous duty cycles, and for that reason the structures supporting them have to meet stringent standards if the installation is to remain reliable over a long life. The support is not a passive frame. It sits in the same air stream as the fan, it takes the reaction of an unbalanced rotating mass, and it is usually the part that fails first when the material or the geometry is wrong. Components of this kind sit squarely in the machinery and equipment sector, where a special profile often replaces a fabricated assembly.

Mirrored Supports, Corrosion Resistance and Controlled Elasticity

The support system carried its own set of requirements, three in total. The profiles are cut, bent and manipulated by the customer to obtain perfectly specular supports, which means the geometry delivered has to hold very tight tolerances, since two parts formed from the same section only mirror each other correctly if the starting bar is dimensionally identical along its length. The structure had to resist corrosion and wear, because the atmosphere around an industrial fan is rarely clean and the abrasive content of the air stream works continuously on every surface. The third requirement is the most demanding, since the support had to carry load while staying elastic enough to absorb vibration without permanent distortion. A section that is simply stiffened until it stops moving transmits the vibration into the bolted joints instead, so the aim is controlled flexibility rather than maximum rigidity.

Application Context

Duplex steel S32205 was selected to address corrosion and wear together, since its ferritic austenitic structure combines high resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking with roughly double the yield strength of standard austenitic grades. That strength is what allows the support to flex under vibration and return to shape rather than take a permanent set, so the same choice answers both the environmental and the mechanical requirement. Hybrid laser welding produced the U-shaped geometry with sharp corners, meeting the dimensional and straightness standards the customer specified and giving clean reference faces for the cutting and bending carried out downstream. Sections of this family belong to the Montanstahl range of stainless steel channels, produced in duplex, super duplex and austenitic grades in standard and custom dimensions, with the choice of route explained under processing and open points covered in the technical Q&A.
