Hot Extruded Stainless Forklift Profiles for Hygienic Plants

A forklift working inside a food or pharmaceutical plant is subject to the same rules as the production line around it, and a painted structural profile struggles to meet them. Every washdown attacks the coating, and once paint begins to flake it becomes a contamination risk rather than a protection. Montanstahl produces hot extruded stainless steel profiles for this equipment, in 1.4301, 1.4404 and duplex 1.4462 according to the corrosion and load requirements, used for lifting masts, guide rails, frames and reinforcements without any coating at all.

When the Coating Becomes the Problem

Material handling equipment working in the food and in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries operates in conditions that punish conventional construction, with high humidity, frequent washdowns and exposure to corrosive substances including salts, acids and alkalis. Painted carbon steel profiles suffer twice over in this setting. The coating is damaged by impact and by cleaning, and once it is breached the steel underneath begins to corrode from the edge of the defect outward. Paint flaking creates a direct contamination risk in areas where product is handled, while the corrosion beneath reduces structural reliability and drives up maintenance. What these plants needed was a material solution that is hygienic, durable and low maintenance by nature rather than by virtue of a surface treatment applied over something that would otherwise rust.

Strength, Hygiene and Service Life in One Section

Five objectives shaped the change. The first was to replace painted carbon steel profiles that are prone to corrosion and coating damage, which is the starting point rather than the result. The second was to keep high mechanical strength, because these are load bearing forklift components and the lifting mast in particular sees bending and torsion with the load at full height. The third was long term corrosion resistance in aggressive industrial environments, so the part performs at the end of its life as it did at the beginning. The fourth was compliance with the strict hygiene requirements of sensitive production sectors, where cleanability and the absence of flaking material are inspected rather than assumed. The fifth was to reduce maintenance effort and extend equipment service life, since a truck taken out of service for repainting costs far more than the paint. The tension sits between strength and corrosion resistance, as the grades that resist best are not always the strongest.

Application Context

Hot extruded stainless steel forklift profiles were selected in 1.4301 for general duty, 1.4404 where chlorides and cleaning chemicals are more aggressive, and duplex 1.4462 where the load case calls for higher strength in the same envelope, so the grade follows the requirement rather than the other way round. Applied to lifting masts, guide rails, frames and reinforcements, the sections deliver high bending and torsional strength without any coating, which removes paint flaking and corrosion at the source, improves hygiene, reduces maintenance and extends service life in continuous operation. Hot extrusion suits these components because a single pass produces closed and deeply recessed shapes with the surface quality a washdown environment needs, and without minimum quantities that would penalise a specialised vehicle range. Sections are developed as special profiles from the manufacturer’s drawing, with details in the technical Q&A.
