Laser Welded Stainless Beams for Industrial Fryer Platform
An industrial fryer for chicken nuggets is a very long processing line, and the platform that carries it has to be built from structural sections that tolerate hot oil, steam and daily washdown without corroding. For a project designed to increase output for a global fast food chain, the customer needed IPE500, IPE240 and HEB160 beams in stainless steel 304L, produced by laser welding with geometric tolerances to European standards and supplied in custom lengths reaching 12,350 mm. The order exceeded 36 tons of profiles and had to be delivered in less than a month.

Why Food Processing Lines Are Built in Stainless Steel
Durability, corrosion resistance and hygiene are the three properties that make stainless steel the default material in the food and beverage sector. Surfaces have to be cleaned frequently, they have to tolerate aggressive detergents and sanitizing agents, and they must not release contamination into the product. Those requirements apply to the equipment in direct contact with food, but they also extend to the structure that supports it, since a corroding support inside a wash-down zone becomes a hygiene problem long before it becomes a structural one. In this project the customer required structural beams for a very large platform carrying an industrial chicken nuggets fryer, part of a processing line built to raise production volumes for a global fast food chain. The scale of the order matched the scale of the line, with more than 36 tons of profiles required and a delivery window of less than one month.
Large Sizes, Tight Tolerances and Lengths Beyond the Standard
The specification combined three demands that rarely arrive together. The first concerned the sections themselves, since the platform called for IPE500 and IPE240 beams together with HEB160, all in laser welded execution and all held to the geometric tolerances defined by European standards. The second concerned the material, because the platform sits in an environment where hot oil and heat meet water and detergent several times a day, so the grade had to combine corrosion resistance with a surface that stays hygienic under repeated washing. The third was dimensional, since standard stainless structural sections are commonly available in six metre lengths while this platform needed custom lengths up to 12,350 mm. Cutting long spans from shorter bars generates scrap and butt welds on site, an issue examined in our article on laser welded sections in custom lengths, and neither option was acceptable within the delivery time available.

Application Context
Laser welding made it possible to produce beams of this size directly in stainless steel 304L, since the sections are built from cut plate rather than rolled from a standard programme, which is what allows a large profile to be supplied in a length that no mill stocks. The profiles were blasted with stainless steel grit to reach the required surface finish, a step that matters in wash-down environments because a uniform surface is easier to clean and less prone to retaining residue. Dimensional inspections for geometric tolerances were then carried out according to EN 1090-2, and the beams were supplied cut to size in lengths ranging from 3,100 mm to 12,350 mm. Projects of this type sit within the Montanstahl range of stainless steel beams, produced in 304L, 316L and other grades for food processing equipment, platforms and support structures, and technical questions on grades, tolerances and finishes are covered in the technical Q&A.
