Custom Z Profiles for Nuclear Reactor Filter Systems
Filter systems inside a nuclear reactor combine a demanding geometry with a level of quality control that few applications require. For this project the customer needed special Z shaped profiles in stainless steel 304L, measuring 180x80x140 mm and supplied in custom lengths between 5,740 and 5,940 mm, with notches, cuts and holes positioned according to the customer’s own drawing. Montanstahl produced the sections by laser welding from laser cut components, then milled and sandblasted them before delivery, meeting a short lead time without relaxing any of the dimensional requirements.

Stainless Steel in Nuclear Plants and Where Filters Fit In
Stainless steel runs through most of the equipment in a nuclear plant, from reactors and heat exchangers to turbines and radioactive sludge ponds. It is chosen over other materials because it offers maximum corrosion resistance together with long term reliability and very little maintenance, which matters in an environment where access for inspection or replacement is restricted, expensive and sometimes only possible during a scheduled outage. Filters sit inside that logic. They are permanently exposed to the process fluid, they are difficult to reach, and any degradation of the structure holding the filtering elements affects the performance of the system as a whole. In this project the customer needed special profiles for nuclear reactor filters, and along with a challenging geometry came quality control requirements that rank among the most stringent found anywhere in the nuclear and energy sector.
A Z Section With Machined Features and No Room for Drift
The request covered five points at once. The section had to be a special Z shape rather than any catalogue profile, it had to be supplied in custom lengths between 5,740 and 5,940 mm, and it had to be made in a stainless steel with high corrosion resistance. On top of that came customized laser cutting following the customer’s drawing, with notches, cuts and holes distributed along the full length of the bar, and the whole package had to be delivered within a short lead time. The difficulty lies in how these requirements interact. A Z profile close to six metres long is inherently prone to distortion, and every machined feature has to remain in position relative to a reference that must stay stable along the entire bar, which is exactly the class of problem described in our article on custom profiles in steel, where geometry, tolerance and downstream assembly are treated as a single design question rather than three separate ones.

Application Context
The profile was produced in stainless steel 304L, with the components laser cut directly from the customer’s drawing and then joined on the five axis laser robot, which keeps heat input low enough to control distortion over lengths approaching six metres. The notches, cuts and holes were executed by laser cutting to extremely tight tolerances, and the bars were milled and sandblasted as the final steps before delivery, which was completed on schedule. The finished dimensions of 180x80x140 mm matched the customer’s requirements without rework. Sections of this kind belong to the Montanstahl range of special profiles, produced from a technical drawing in stainless and carbon steel grades for filtration equipment, internal supports and other components where geometry and inspection requirements are set by the plant rather than by a catalogue. Details on tolerances, grades and documentation are available in the technical Q&A.
