Laser Welded Stainless Steel 316L Posts for the Story Bridge Safety Barrier in Brisbane
Brisbane’s Story Bridge, the longest bridge in Australia, became the focus of an AUD 8.4 million public investment to construct a stainless steel mesh safety barrier along both pedestrian walkways. The project combined a structural requirement with a sensitive heritage and aesthetic context: the bridge is a listed landmark, and the barrier had to integrate without compromising its visual character. Montanstahl was commissioned to manufacture and supply the stainless steel posts that form the structural backbone of the mesh wall. The posts were produced as custom laser welded sections in 316L stainless steel with a polished surface finish to Ra 0.7 µm, in custom lengths of 3.4 m and 4.5 m, delivered ahead of schedule.

316L and a Polished Surface: the Material Logic for a Public Infrastructure Installation
A safety barrier on a coastal bridge in Queensland is exposed to salt-laden air, UV, and the cleaning and maintenance cycles of a public infrastructure asset. Stainless steel 316L, with its molybdenum content and excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance, is the appropriate structural material for this exposure class. The polished surface to Ra 0.7 µm serves two purposes: it reduces the surface roughness that would otherwise accumulate chloride deposits, and it provides the clean visual appearance required for a heritage-listed landmark. The post cross-section of 80 x 80 x 6 x 6 mm with an off-centre core was specified by the client to meet the structural requirements of the mesh attachment and the loading conditions on the bridge walkway.
Off-Centre Core, Custom Lengths, Low Heat Input: Why Laser Welding Was the Right Process
The post geometry specified an off-centre core inside a constant 80 x 80 mm outer section with 6 mm wall thicknesses. This asymmetric internal geometry cannot be produced by hot rolling and is precisely the type of cross-section that laser welding from plate is designed to handle. The low heat input of the laser welding process was also critical: higher heat input would have distorted the thin-walled section and compromised the flat faces required for the polished surface finish. Posts were cut to the specified lengths of 3.4 m and 4.5 m, polished to Ra 0.7 µm, and packed for shipment to Brisbane. Montanstahl completed and dispatched part of the order ahead of the agreed delivery schedule.
