Laser Welded Stainless Steel Profiles for a Residential Staircase
Parco Nocc is a modern residential complex overlooking the Gulf of Lugano, comprising 16 accommodations across flats and small villas. Montanstahl, in collaboration with Swiss fabricator Officine Cameroni SA, was tasked with designing and producing the stainless steel staircase for one of the flats, supplying both the structural support beams and the individual stair steps. The profiles had to be manufactured in special lengths from 5,315 to 5,365 mm, held to tight tolerances on straightness and torsion, with surfaces free of defects and sandblasted before delivery. The complete supply totalled 1,133 kg of stainless steel 1.4307 (304L) across four bars, produced using laser cutting, 3D laser welding, and bending in combination.
Two Distinct Components: Support Beams and Stair Steps
The staircase required two structurally distinct custom profiles. The main support structure used tailored H-beams, laser-cut from shaped plates to the customer’s drawings and then joined using 3D laser welding to form the finished section geometry. The individual stair steps were produced separately: sheet metal plates were laser-cut to shape and bent into the final U-profile that forms each tread. Both components had to be supplied in non-standard lengths between 5,315 and 5,365 mm, with tight tolerances on straightness and torsion that were essential for the staircase to assemble correctly on site without adjustment. The use of 3D laser welding technology allowed the complex section shapes to be produced with the weld quality and dimensional accuracy that an architecturally exposed residential application demands.
Sandblasted, Cleaned, and Passivated Before Delivery
Before leaving the production facility, all special beams underwent a complete surface treatment sequence: sandblasting to remove any surface contamination introduced during fabrication, internal cleaning, and passivation to restore and strengthen the chromium oxide passive layer on the stainless steel surface. Passivation is a critical step for stainless steel components that will be permanently visible in an interior residential setting: it ensures that the passive layer is intact and uniform across all faces, including weld zones, before the profiles reach the installation site. The four finished bars were supplied ready for direct installation by Officine Cameroni SA, with no additional surface treatment required on site.
