Laser Fused Stainless Steel Facade Beams for the Cornell University Dairy Plant

Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences undertook a $105 million renovation of Stocking Hall, the 88-year-old home of its Department of Food Science. A central element of the project was a new 1,130 m² Dairy Plant and the Cornell Dairy Bar, a research and teaching facility producing over 530,000 litres of milk and 75,000 litres of ice cream annually. The glass facade of the new building required custom stainless steel beams: a material choice driven by the hygiene, durability, and cleanability demands of an active food production environment. Montanstahl supplied 42 laser fused special beams in stainless steel 304 and 304L, polished to grit 240, within a strict 10-week production schedule.

Why a Food Production Facility Specifies Stainless Steel for Its Facade Structure

In a dairy production environment, the structural materials used in the building envelope are subject to the same hygiene logic that governs the process equipment inside. Surfaces need to resist moisture, cleaning agents, and microbial accumulation without degrading over time. Stainless steel 304 and 304L meet these requirements directly: the alloy provides corrosion resistance in contact with water and mild cleaning agents, the smooth polished surface does not harbour contaminants, and the material does not require protective coatings that could deteriorate in a humid food production atmosphere. For the Cornell Dairy Plant facade, stainless steel was the material specification that satisfied both the hygienic intent of the building and its architectural character on the Ithaca campus.

13.2 Tonnes of Custom Beams, Non-Standard Geometry, Grit 240 Finish, 10 Weeks

The specification called for beams with non-standard flange widths and thicknesses — dimensions that fall outside the standard range of hot rolled stainless steel sections and required production by laser fusion. Montanstahl produced 42 beams of 9,120 mm length in stainless steel 304 and 304L, totalling over 13.2 tonnes. Each beam was polished to a grit 240 finish across all exposed surfaces, providing the visual consistency the facade required while meeting the functional surface quality standard for a food production environment. The entire order was completed and delivered within a 10-week production window aligned with the construction programme at Cornell.

Application Context
